SeaDek Contributes Custom Cockpit Pads to ORACLE Team USA Youth Sailing Project

As a Technical Supplier of ORACLE Team USA, SeaDek is always eager to support the team in every way possible.  Recently the team has taken on the the project of restoring a fleet of decommissioned Optimus sailing dingys to donate to a local sailing club in Bermuda for their junior sailing program, and we were proud to create custom SeaDek cockpit pads in Aqua Camo/Black for the project.  See the repost from ORACLE Team USA below or click here to view the story on their page.

Screen Shot 2016-12-07 at 8.03.38 AM

On Friday afternoon, ORACLE TEAM USA donated a second batch of 15 Optimist dinghies to a Bermuda sailing club. The boats have been completely refurbished to ‘better than new’ condition by the ORACLE TEAM USA boat-builders after being rescued from the scrap heap, and today were donated to Sandys Boat Club.In total, the team has now re-built 30 Optimist dinghies at its base in Bermuda and donated them to youth sailing projects, with support from the America’s Cup Endeavour youth education and sailing program and its partners.“I’ve always said we have the best shore-side operation in the America’s Cup and our boat-builders have demonstrated that with this effort,” said skipper Jimmy Spithill. “These guys work very long hours at the best of times but they just got stuck in and put the extra hours in to re-build these boats so more kids can get out sailing.”

ORACLE TEAM USA’s boat-building crew is led by Mark Turner, an America’s Cup veteran who has overseen the build program for the last two America’s Cup winning boats. He says the professional skills the boat-builders have honed in building and maintaining America’s Cup boats were put to use in refurbishing the Optimists.

“I’m really proud of the guys who made the time to tackle this project,” Turner said. “If you look at these boats, it’s hard to believe that they were on the scrap heap just a few months ago. They look better than brand new. The guys have done incredible work.”

The ORACLE TEAM USA boat-builders who contributed their time and skills to the Optimist refurbishment are: Ben English, Joe Iheureux, Dallas Willcut, Jared Spiller, Adam Rosewarne, Fred Brodzinski, Tim Charters, Matthew Hynes, and Mike Rolfing.

In February of this year, ORACLE TEAM USA donated a first batch of 15 Optimist dinghies to the America’s Cup Endeavour program for use by its graduates. Those boats – in various states of disrepair – had been given to the program by the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club.

ORACLE TEAM USA’s boat-builders invested significant time and resources in bringing them up to ‘better than new’ condition. Several of those boats were sailed by America’s Cup Endeavour graduates in the recent Bermuda Optimist Dinghy National Championships.

This second batch of Optimist dinghies came from Sandys Boat Club, and were severely damaged in the two hurricanes that struck Bermuda in 2014.

“This will have a huge impact on the rejuvenation and sustainability of our Junior Sailing Programme,” said Martin Siese, Past Commodore and Club Sailing Coordinator for Sandys Boat Club.

“One of our main stumbling blocks to restarting our Junior programme was the condition of our boats, and the huge amount of work that would be required to get them ready to sail. Most of these boats were 20 years old. We effectively now have 15 ‘as new’ boats, so that stumbling block has been removed for us by ORACLETEAM USA.

“Our ultimate goal is to have year-round programme which could see 100+ sailors using the boats every year.”

The Optimist refurbishment project has also been supported by North Sails, Harken, Magic Marine, SeaDek, and Dynamic Dollies, all of whom also support America’s Cup Endeavour.

SeaDek Sponsors MRAA Retail Compensation Study

MINNEAPOLIS, December 1, 2016 — The Marine Retailers Association of the Americas announced today that SeaDek Marine Products has come on board to support MRAA’s efforts to field and finalize a retail compensation and benefits study.

As a manufacturer of non-skid, closed-cell EVA traction products, SeaDek has demonstrated a deep commitment to supporting the marine dealer body with its new membership with the MRAA and its participation in the upcoming Marine Dealer Conference & Expo. SeaDek COO Serenity Gardner and VP of Marketing/Advertising Jason Gardner have also voiced a desire to help the industry work to solve its workforce issues.

“We talked with the SeaDek team about its sincere interest in supporting industry efforts on the workforce front as far back as the American Boating Congress event,” explains Matt Gruhn, President of MRAA. “We’re honored to work alongside them on this compensation and benefits study, as one of our first steps in identifying and addressing the workforce issues our industry is faced with.”

This first-of-its-kind study has already seen participation from hundreds of retail outlets in the United States and Canada. The deadline to submit compensation data, which will be collected in confidence, is December 15th. Retailers have received an invite and two follow-up reminders to date. If they have not received an invite but would like to participate in this survey, please contact Matt Gruhn at matt@mraa.com or 763-333-2421.

This compensation study follows an intensive Workforce Assessment project conducted by MRAA, which outlined that, among other factors, one of the largest issues the marine industry faces in hiring and retaining employees is its ability to compete with the compensation rates of other industries.

“As a fast-growing US manufacturer, hiring and retaining employees is an important issue we face every day. The only way to properly address a complex challenge such as this is with a more comprehensive understanding of the underlying factors at work,” said Jason Gardner, VP of Marketing at SeaDek. “We feel that this study will help our industry better comprehend and contend with the issues surrounding this problem.”

The survey itself asks dealers to provide some demographic information, such as geographic location, total revenue category, type of retail operation, employee benefits offered, and service rates, in addition to specific compensation data for 34 common job titles. MRAA partnered with Readex Research, a third-party firm that specializes in self-administered research methods, association research projects, and specifically, salary and benefits surveys to conduct the survey on MRAA’s behalf.

SeaDek Cleans up like New

We are always getting asked by our customers “How do I clean my SeaDek” and “Will I be able to clean it to look new again?”

The answer is yes! SeaDek is easy to clean and you can clean it exactly like you would clean your boat.

before after

We just received these pictures from Mike Conneen, Executive Director of Anglers for Conservation. Mike was recently living out of his kayak for seven days as he kayaked the Big Bend Saltwater Paddling Trail and took these before and after his trip. Unfortunately, rats got ahold of his Procure and got it, as well as their droppings, all over his SeaDek pads. He said it was nasty, but after a bit of cleaning his SeaDek looked like new! Thanks Mike!

Cleaning your SeaDek is simple; all you need is soap, hot water, and a stiff brush to remove most common dirt and grime. Even household cleaners such as Softscrub®, Simple Green®, 409®, and bleach are all safe to use. Just be sure to avoid acid-based cleaners such as MaryKate’s On and Off Hull cleaner, and your SeaDek will be sparkling for years to come.

Thanksgiving at SeaDek

As the SeaDek family continues to grow, the traditional SeaDek Thanksgiving feast just gets larger and larger. This year we had almost 100 employees join together for the meal, the most in our history. After growing out of our inside meal area, we brought dinner into our breezeway, where we set up tables for the feast and enjoyed the cool (for us Floridians) November breeze blowing through the building.

Dinner consisted of all the Thanksgiving favorites, with four giant turkeys and all the trimmings. This year we deep-fried the turkeys, a first for many of our employees, and they turned out wonderful—crispy, juicy, and delicious.

Before eating, CEO Kurt Wilson got up to say a few words, thanking SeaDek’s employees for all their hard work, and counting everyone’s blessings for the prosperity that SeaDek has experienced and shared with their staff.

The SeaDek family truly is blessed, and we look forward to the holiday season, thankful for what the year has brought us.

SeaDek Featured in ECN Magazine

SeaDek Marine Products of Rockledge, Florida, prides itself in providing quality non-skid decking products to its customers. When the company needed a solution to an existing material limitation for a type of foam, called closed-cell EVA, used for its padded deck protectors, experts from the Cryogenics Test Laboratory (CTL) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center stepped in to give them a hand.

Cryogenics experts James Fesmire, senior principal investigator, and Adam Swanger, senior research engineer, both from the CTL, suggested some new materials test and evaluation procedures, and access to testing equipment that would not be cost-effective for the company to purchase themselves.

“With our experience in materials and thermal management for real-world environments, we were able to suggest a new approach to the challenge of the marine application,” said Fesmire. “It is exciting to see the technical intersection between our two different areas and participate with SeaDek to help find a solution and advance their products.”

The meetings and exchange of information were made possible through NASA’s Regional Economic Development (RED) Program, an agencywide initiative that began in 2010. Kennedy and the Economic Development Commission (EDC) of Florida’s Space Coast formed a strategic alliance in January 2015 for a regional economic development pilot program called Technology Docking to help the center engage with local companies in the region.

After a screening process, the RED Program matches interested small companies with corresponding experts at Kennedy, who offer advice, help solve a problem, provide a new or cost-saving way to solve the problem or suggest an alternative solution.

“As a progressive manufacturing company doing business in the heart of the Space Coast, working with our neighbors at Kennedy Space Center was a natural fit,” said Kurt Wilson, SeaDek CEO. “We have spent many years breaking down material boundaries, and the assistance from NASA and the EDC brings fresh insight and resources to our mission as a company.”

Robert Ashley, with the Exploration Research and Technology Directorate at Kennedy, is the project lead for the center’s RED Program. When the EDC selects companies for the program, Ashley helps to match them with subject-matter experts at the center.

“The RED Program is the means by which NASA can use its tremendous talent and capabilities, purchased by taxpayer investment, to return a dividend to local communities by engaging with area companies to help them overcome technological challenges and bring new or better products to market faster than otherwise possible, leading to job creation and economic growth,” Ashley said.

Ashley said sometimes companies just need the reassurance that they are going in the right direction. Other times, they need additional consultations and technical assistance.

“We also have had some instances where helping companies ultimately ends up helping us as well,” Ashley added.

Another company that received assistance through the RED Program, was GeNO LLC, a biopharmaceutical company in Cocoa. The company produces nitric oxide drug delivery products for a variety of therapeutic uses. The challenge involved a reaction vessel that worked intermittently and how to correct the problem.

Several NASA mechanical engineers with backgrounds in fluid dynamic analysis, thermal modeling and structures were matched with the company.

Charles Moore, an aerospace engineer with the Launch Services Program, met with GeNO and recommended the development of a material equation of state that would provide far greater insight into the gas evolution process within the reaction vessel.

“The Technology Docking Program was a productive experience for GeNO LLC,” said Ryan Denton, an engineer with the company. “The subject-matter experts assisted us in a search for an answer that would have taken us an additional two years to find on our own.”

Denton said the face-to-face meetings with NASA engineers were always very stimulating. “Technology Docking not only saved us product development time, but also saved us money,” Denton said.

Ashley said there are plans to broaden the program’s reach to make it easier for companies to partner with the center, including an umbrella Space Act Agreement with the EDC that will serve as a conduit and make it easier for smaller companies to access Kennedy’s expertise.

“This effort is about connecting our regional industry with NASA’s technology, capabilities and resources, with the goal of solving technology challenges together and driving economic successes for the region,” said Elizabeth Huy, EDC senior manager of business development.

Kennedy is one of six NASA centers participating in the Regional Economic Development Program, part of the agency’s Space Technology Mission Directorate, and currently the only one formally partnering with an economic development organization. Over the past two years, 69 companies have participated in initial discussions with NASA experts, and fourteen of those companies have been selected to receive additional NASA assistance through the Technology Docking program.
