With today’s markup of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee demanded the Army Corps of Engineers minimize discharges of toxic water to Florida’s estuaries.

Thanks to our members and supporters for fighting the attempts by some members of Congress to limit the Army Corps’ ability to do this by subjecting the new Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM) to the savings clause.

That harmful language did not make it into WRDA 2020. This is a huge win for all Americans who enjoy Florida’s fishing, beaches and environment.

Thank you Congressman Brian Mast and Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell for your bipartisan leadership on Everglades restoration. This is one more step forward in the marathon to save the Everglades.

Background: Three months ago, we learned of an attempt being driven by special interests to reconfigure the Lake Okeechobee release schedule, securing their irrigation water supply as the priority consideration for all Lake Okeechobee release decisions. This was being done under the cover of a global pandemic and is the type of political scheme that has hindered Everglades restoration progress for decades. Read more about this issue.
